For a proper oil check, the car should be on level ground and the engine should be cooled. The person performing the inspection needs to remove an instrument called an oil level dipstick, which is located somewhere in the engine under the hood of the car. The oil level dipstick was removed once, then wiped clean, and its shaft reinserted and removed again. This has to be done because the first time the dipstick is removed, the dipstick may be covered in too much oil for an accurate reading of the oil level due to the crash of the car in transit. There will be markings on the dipstick, such as the letters H and L, which stand for "High" and "Low" respectively, showing acceptable and minimum oil levels.
